- Make it a habit: Every time you go to the store for groceries, pick up a few extra non-perishable/ no cook/ canned food items.
- Each person needs enough food for 72 hours.
- Consider purchasing food items with the following characteristics:
- Have at least a 6 month shelf life
- Are portable
- Have sufficient calories and nutrition
- Are foods that your family will eat
- Are easy to prepare and consume
- Includes some fun/ comfort food items such as candy or sweets
- Continue to save food after your 72 hour kit is complete to create a 3 month reserve.
- Be sure to include a manual can opener if you have any cans in your food supply.
- Remember, you will need to update your 72 hour kit in 6 months to check for expired food and to change your water supply.
